Benin Bronzes : The Queen Mother

A Warrior Queen and Queen Mother : Queen Idia from 16th century Kingdom of Benin \(part of current day Nigeria) was equally known for her military achievements at the front as well as her royal status.

When her husband Ozolua, the Oba of Benin, died she became Oba in interim until her son, Esigie, became old enough to reign. When Esigie took the throne, he gave his mother the title of Iyoba with many privileges to maintain her status.

Iyoba is a Yoruba word meaning Queen Mother.
Iya : mother / Oba : chief, ruler
Kingdom of Benin : Western part of Nigeria
