Prof Hakim Adi gives the key note lecture for Bernie Grant Memorial 2024

Professor Hakim Adi delivers the annual Bernie Grant memorial lecture 2024

Yesterday, the Bernie Grant annual lecture was delivered by Professor Hakim Adi and we attended the event for you. Here are some highlights of the evening.

Professor Hakim Adi is one of the first academics in the UK when it comes to African History and Pan-Africanism. If you discover his name, please consult some of his numerous books and publications.

He opened his keynote with a pinch of humour to get the audience comfortable and then thanked the organisers of the event in a few words.
Bernie Grant was one of the first Black MPs elected in Britain and his annual memorial lecture is always delivered by high-level profiles of leaders, authors and academics.

In his lecture introduction, Prof Hakim referred to Bernie Grant’s famous speech “Reparations or Bust” which was given on 11 April 1993 in Birmingham. In that speech, Bernie Grant said “our history has been distorted so as to deny our achievements.” and Prof Hakim explained to us how the quote still resonates with our situation today.
The lecture was followed by a panel discussion with Prof Hakim, two of his students, A. S. Francis and Hannah Francis, and Dotun Adebayo, famous BBC 5Live Radio presenter, as chair.

It was an interesting conversation about the training of Black Historians and the challenges they face in the academic spaces where they are trained.

The event was well attended and followed by a book signing opportunity for the audience to meet Prof Hakim and get his book.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers for hosting this great evening. See you next year!
