It seems like September means going ‘back to school‘ time for TV as well.
This month, amongst the many programs out there, two in particular caught our attention.
1. Small Axe : Mangrove
50 years ago, on 9 August 1970, over 150 people from African, Caribbean and South Asian descent took out the streets of Notting Hill to protest against the constant police harassment of the Mangrove restaurant.
Owned by Frank Crichlow, Mangrove was a cultural hotspot, where lovely meals, useful legal advice, political debates and even showbiz celebrities showed up to gather as a community. It helped many feel like at home miles away from the sun for a few hours and take a break from the racist environment they lived in.
Award-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen, the director of this movie, decided to use his talents in order to honour Black British history with great care. Mangrove opened the 64th edition of BFI London Film Festival and received critial acclaim from the press.
Letitia Wright plays the role of Altheia Lecointe-Jones, young political activist and leader of the British Black Panthers, who was determined to challenge mentalities and social injustice in her time.
As Black History Month approches, this has great timing very specific moment of Black British history which led to the controversial trial of the infamous Mangrove Nine activists.
